Medical marijuana has been proven to work pretty well for treating chronic inflammation, as well as for alleviating the pain caused by inflammatory-related medical conditions, thanks to its two active compounds, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).

While both cannabinoids have proven anti-inflammatory properties, their mechanism of action is entirely different. Both of them contribute to decreasing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and their release in the system. However, CBD is also effective in reducing the activity of a primary pathway that plays a major role in regulating the genes that promote inflammation in the body, as well as in the regulation of the STAT3 transcription factor (Kozela et al., 2010). This mechanism consists from the suppression of the fatty acid amidohydrolase activity, which triggers a higher concentration of anandamide, a potent anti-inflammatory cannabinoid (Burstein & Zurier, 2009).

Inflammation and pain are the common symptoms of several inflammatory diseases such as cancer and sickle cell disease. Cannabis appears to be very useful in managing this type of pain. Its cannabinoids interact with the cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2, involved in transmitting the pain that comes with inflammation (Clayton, et al. 2002) (Elikottil, Gupta & Gupta, 2009). There are also some studies that have demonstrated that CBD works in decreasing neuropathic pain by alleviating the inflammation related to the sciatic nerve constriction (Costa, et al., 2007).
